Application and Enrolment – Full Time

Full time Study

Students applying for full time study are required to ensure that they meet the entry requirements of the qualification they intend applying for.  These requirements will either be expressed as a lower level qualification that you will require in order to be eligible for the course for which you are applying. So for example to apply for the Certificate IV in Disability Work you will need to have successfully completed the Certificate III in Disability Work. Alternatively entrance requirements may be specified in terms of proficiency in communication and, if required, maths skills, or school results.

The levels of proficiency of communication and maths skills required for entry into a course are measured on the following scale:
●    basic skills

●●  developed skills

●●  well developed skills

●●
●●  highly developed skills

How do I meet the entrance requirements?

Choose a qualification online at the Training WA website and read the information under the qualification entrance requirements.  Then go to the online skills calculator at tasonline.tafe.wa.edu.au/Reckoner/Default.aspx.

Alternatively you can refer to the evidence guides.  These let you know what documents you need to provide to the Admission Centre to show you meet the required level of communication skills and, if required, maths skills.  These documents may include:

  • school results
  • tests
  • other qualifications
  • bridging and access courses

What are selection criteria?

Selection criteria are academic and other criteria (e.g. work experience, industry involvement and current and previous employment) which are used to rank eligible applicants competing for entry into a course where there are more applications than places available.

How do I address selection criteria?

If the courses for which you are applying stipulate that you address selection criteria this means that you need to submit additional information with your application form.  The type of information required is listed below:

You can score points for the following

Qualification pathway (maximum score = 29 points)
This includes any qualification completed/not completed.  A qualification pathways is where one qualification leads to another (e.g. Certificate I leads to Certificate II.

Work experience/employment (maximum score = 29 points)
This includes any employment or workplace experience that you have. Note: To verify the work experience or employment that you cite in your application you will be required to provide copies of either a reference, pay slip or group certificate/summary.  Resumes and telephone references are not acceptable authentication.

Education/skills development (maximum score = 42 points)
This includes secondary education (current or past) or a portfolio demonstrating skill development.  The portfolio may include qualifications or tests you have completed in the past.  For more information on how the points are calculated for this section and evidence required, go to tafe.wa.edu.au or telephone the Admissions Centre on (08) 9224 6560.

Continuing Students

If you plan to continue your full time studies at the South West Institute of Technology within your current learning pathway for a qualification that only requires you to meet entrance requirements, you must enrol directly at the College on the designated dates.

Should you decide to for to another Institute, select a qualification that is not in your current learning pathway (e.g. go from Certificate III in Business to Certificate III in Information Technology) or if you decide to apply for a qualification that has both entrance requirements and selection criteria, you will need to apply through the Admissions Centre.

You must also:
Provide proof of your qualification
Read the entrance requirements and, if applicable, any selection criteria for the qualification you wish to study in the next semester.

What should I do if I do not have any documents or I have completed my schooling overseas?
If you do not have any documents and have studied in Australia, you will need to contact the institution where you studied.  If you were in secondary school In Western Australia telephone the Curriculum Council on 9273 6300 for your records.  Allow some time to get a copy of your qualifications.

If you studied overseas, you need to get a Secondary Education Equivalence Application.  This is a document that states your qualification and shows the nearest equivalent qualification in Australia.  For secondary school students contact the Curriculum Council on (08) 9273 6300 to obtain your Secondary Education Equivalence Application.  For post-secondary qualifications you need to  obtain an Assessment Advice Form from the Overseas Qualifications Unit on (08) 92246566.  You may also need to provide proof that you meet the English language requirement for the qualification you want to study.
