Student IT Network and Agreement

When you first log onto the College network, you will see a copy of the Student Network User Agreement. You must accept it to be permitted access to the network.  This message will subsequently disappear once you have accepted it.

These terms of the agreement are as follows:

The South West Institute of Technology (SWIT) provides computing resources to assist students complete their studies.
 
The use of computing resources is a  privilege.  Students are to use the resources in a  responsible manner and respect the integrity of computer systems, networks and data, and the rules and regulations governing their use as detailed below.

  • All use of computer resources must be directly related to your course/qualification of study.
  • You must not reveal your password to others nor use another person’s account.
  • Installation of any software or hardware, or changing the  configuration of any equipment unless explicitly directed by a SWIT lecturer is prohibited.
  • You may not act in any way that may disrupt the use of the network or computing resources.
  • Seeking to gain unauthorised access to SWIT computer systems is prohibited.
  • It is prohibited to use SWIT services for malicious purpose.
  • The use of SWITservices for commercial activity is prohibited.
  • You may not use SWIT services to create, host or transmit material, or engage in activities that could cause offence to others.
  • All information accessible via the network should be assumed to be private property.
  • You must not use SWIT services for any activities which contravene the laws of Australia or its states and territories, or of the destination country in the case of data being transmitted abroad.

Monitoring of computer usage, including email and Internet use, is carried out regularly. SWIT reserves the right to retrieve any item/file on the computer system at any time, including email, and information accessed via the Internet.

Consequences for misuse/abuse of computing resources:

  • Warning
  • Loss of privilege to use computing resources
  • Referral to administration for discipline
  • Referral to authorities for legal processing
  • Depending on severity, the disciplinary process may include combinations of the above

How to login at the Institute

  1. Turn the PC on
  2. Ensure Workstation Only is NOT ticked
  3. Enter your username and password
    Username is your Student ID (eg 080901234)
    [ Tip - this is on your library card
    Past students may need to put 08 in front of their ID ]
         Password is your date of birth, ddmmyyyy
    [ Eg. 1st of February 1982 = 01021982 ]
  4. Click OK

If you are presented with this screen, click OK
DO NOT ADD ANYTHING TO THE BOX
  
Can't login?  Please check the following:

  • Is the Student ID correct? – check your library card
  • Is the date of birth entered correctly? – see example above
  • Try using 01011901 as the password. – this is used if the date of birth was not recorded at enrolment
  • Ask your lecturer for help.
  • See the IT Help Desk in Building B. – Contact details are provided below.

You can change your password at any time.
Press Control + Alt + Delete (on the keyboard)
Click Change Password
  
Keep your password private
If others know your password they can:

  • Access your account and therefore your documents, email and information.
  • Perform incriminating activities under your login.
    Your account is for you and you only.
