Conditions of Membership
Our aim is to create an inviting, pleasant and productive working environment for all users of the Library. Please assist us in respecting the rights of other users by:
- Displaying appropriate behaviour at all times, which is not offensive to or disruptive of other library users
- Respecting Library property and equipment by not acting in a manner which causes, or is likely to cause damage to Library property
- Being considerate of other patrons if you need to make or receive mobile phone calls whilst in the Library
- Supervising your children at all times whilst in the Library
- Presenting your bags for inspection if requested by Library staff
Any other Institute students or staff members may also borrow from SWIT. Items may be borrowed either through the Inter Library Loan service (ask at your own library), or via a letter of introduction from your own library. You may borrow up to a maximum of three items.
Edith Cowan, Murdoch and Notre Dame University students are also able to join as reciprocal members.
Only SWIT staff and students have access to the Institute’s computer network.
Library staff reserve the right to ask you to leave the Library if your behaviour is inappropriate, or suspend or cancel your borrowing privileges if these conditions are breached.
Borrowing Information
You are responsible for all Library resources borrowed using your card. Membership of the Library is not transferrable and a current ID card must be presented by the signatory.
Reserving an item
If the item that you require is already out on loan, please give the details to a staff member who will place a hold on the item for when it is returned. Upon its return you will be notified with a phone call or by letter so that you may collect it from the Circulation desk.
How many items can you borrow and how long for?
Students may borrow up to 6 items at a time generally for a period of 2 weeks. Some items in high demand may have a more restricted borrowing period – either overnight only or 7 day loan. This is clearly marked on the spine of the item and you will also be told the appropriate return date at the point of issue.
Borrowed items should be returned on or before the due date. Patrons who fail to return overdue items may not be allowed to continue to borrow, may not be resulted, and maybe invoiced for the replacement cost of the item. It is your responsibility to ensure that all your borrowed items are placed in the designated Returns location.
Renewing items
Most items may be renewed provided they are not overdue or required by other borrowers. You may renew a book over the phone or in person at the Circulation desk.
Recalled items
Any borrowed item may be recalled by Library staff and they must be returned to the Library by the date requested.
Borrowing from other libraries
Reciprocal Borrowing
SWIT students and staff may also borrow from all other Institute libraries, and Edith Cowan, Murdoch and Notre Dame Universities.
You must have a Letter of introduction for reciprocal membership signed by the librarian before you contact another library. Each library will have their own rules governing borrowing of their resources with which you will need to comply.
Inter Library Loans
If an item is not available at the SWIT library, you may request an interlibrary loan from another library providing it is course related. Items obtained through the Institute library network are available free of charge however items obtained through our other reciprocal borrowing arrangements may have a fee attached. Please ask at the circulation desk for further information.
You can find out what items are available in the Institute library network through our Library catalogue. Please fill out the following form and present it to our friendly staff.
