Support for Indigenous Students - Ngala Maya

The South West Institute of Technology is committed to building a strong link with the Aboriginal communities within its catchment area which includes Bunbury, Busselton, Collie, Harvey, Manjimup and Margaret River to provide sustainable training outcomes for Aboriginal students.

The Institute’s support unit, Ngala Maya, means “Our Place“, and is designated for Aboriginal staff and students at Bunbury campus whilst also providing assistance to students in regional campuses.

Student Support Officers

There are two Aboriginal Student Support Officers based at Ngala Maya who provide assistance to Aboriginal students with regard to personal matters, career opportunities and training, and course information. These staff members also provide advice to the Institute on cultural matters as well as identifying training and community development needs.
The aims of these support officers are to:

  • Work with students, families and communities
  • Mentor and support students in dealing with external issues
  • Facilitate student interaction with the Institute
  • Provide feedback to the Institute on educational support for students
  • Support students with issues such as; 
    • Enrolment Fees 
    • Tutors 
    • Child Care Information
    • Cultural matters 
    • Institute Facilities 
    • Student Identification
    • Timetables  
    • Books  
    • Course Content
    • Abstudy Application 
    • Personal Issues 
    • Library Card

Courses

Some training courses are designed to meet the training needs of Aboriginal people and the community.
These courses are;
Certificate III & IV in Teachers Assistant
Certificate I in Leadership
Certificate I in Resource and Infrastructure
Certificate I in Rural Operations 

Aboriginal Education, Employment and Training Committee (AEETC)

The Institute has an AEETC committee that provides advice to the Institute management and staff on programs, cultural issues and development of a training plan for Aboriginal people and communities.
